About Me

Welcome! My name is Billan Mahdi, and I am a 17 year old junior from Columbus, Ohio. I created this awareness campaign because I feel as though the public health crisis of maternal mortality is not receiving nearly enough attention globally. With over 800 women dying every day from this preventable problem, this is a health crisis that we cannot ignore. I was first introduced to the issue of maternal mortality when my aunt who resides in Somalia passed away during childbirth, leaving her beautiful children motherless and her family grieving. As I researched the circumstances of her death, I found that this is a common tragic reality for many women in developing countries. Pregnancy is no longer a joyous experience but a dangerous one. My overarching goal for my website is to bring public awareness to an issue that has been overlooked, engage communities to take action, and give a voice to underserved, marginalized women.
